Kids love birthday surprises—for themselves and others—and when celebrated chef Lidia Bastianich’s five grandchildren suggest a surprise birthday dinner for Nonna Mima, Lidia’s mother, and ask her help planning the menu, they learn a lesson in seasonal foods and how to work together in the kitchen to create a special meal they can all treasure.

NONNA’S BIRTHDAY SURPRISE: Lidia’s Family Kitchen (April 2013; Hardcover; $16.95 US) has Nonna Lidia sharing stories about growing up in Italy and making her favorite seasonal dishes with fresh ingredients from the family farm. Upon hearing these stories, the grandkids choose to forego their favorite foods like French fries, chocolate milk, pancakes, raisins and pickles—which would certainly make for an interesting and surprising meal!—for the very special seasonal meal they prepare from fresh ingredients selected at the local farmer’s market.

Dishing out recipes for spring, summer, fall, and winter, America’s beloved Italian-American chef Lidia Bastianich highlights the fruits and vegetable that thrive during each season, as well as fun, safe ways kids can help cook –from Pasta Primavera, where kids can help by choosing their favorite vegetables to wash and clean, to a wonderful winter Potato Gnoccchi where kids can help by kneading, shaping and cutting dough.

A celebration of family and seasonal foods, with an emphasis on a non-wasteful approach, NONNA’S BIRTHDAY SURPRISE will have young and old cooking side by side in the kitchen and appreciating nature’s bounty. Buon appetito!
